CLT in Crete: CLT Greece’s first project on the island
In Chania, Crete, in a distinctive seaside landscape where the rocky character of Crete meets the sea, the timber structure of the first of three two-storey Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) houses has been assembled.
The project is CLT Greece’s first build in Crete, and one more important step for modern timber construction and Mass Timber in Greece.

Our collaboration with Archtify, the project’s architectural and technical team, which chose CLT Greece to deliver the CLT system for the residences, means a great deal to us.
From technical detailing and production to site organisation and assembly, the collaboration was marked by direct communication, effective coordination and quick resolution of technical issues. A genuinely smooth partnership, which continues with the next two residences of the development.

From design to construction
Building with CLT begins long before the first panel reaches the site.
The architectural and structural design is translated into a digitally designed, prefabricated structural system, with every element produced and machined with precision before it is delivered to the project.
In Chania, the timber structure of the two-storey house took shape in a short time, showing the key advantages of prefabrication: precision, an organised process and speed of assembly on site.

Architecture and the Cretan landscape
The house is laid out on two levels, with large openings and a direct relationship between the interior, the natural landscape and the sea.
In this strongly rocky seaside setting, the choice of a timber structure creates a distinctive dialogue between contemporary architecture, technology and the natural landscape.

A collaboration that continues
Building with CLT calls for close collaboration between architectural design, structural engineering, shop drawings, production and construction.
On this project, the collaboration with Archtify worked exactly that way: coordinated, direct and effective, from the earliest stages through to assembly.
The first CLT residence is only the beginning. Two more will follow on the same site, continuing the collaboration and creating a complete CLT project in Crete.
